Canopy Framing Jig

Time: 1 Hour
My buddy Glenn has been using a jig he made for his first RV-8 and I decided that it was an awesome idea that made working on the canopy much easier. I ran to Home Depot and picked up the parts I needed and got to building.
This will allow me to remove the frame from the rollers and put it on the jig and work away from the fuselage at a good height. So now I have a much better work platform to get the canopy to fit the frame.

  1. I’m not sure if you’re still following this, but could you give the specs/directions for building the jig?

    • No I didn’t have any specs as it wouldn’t work for any other frame as everyone is slightly different. What I did was after the frame was bent, pulled, pushed and stretched into position(part of the fun with this frame as Vans will tell you) I just cut the 2”x 4”’s to make the T as large as the frame. Then with the frame sitting upright on top of the frame I marked where the wood dowels needed to be. From there it was just cut two dowels and secure them to the T, I drilled two holes and glued them in. The aft part was easy from that point and just drilled a hole for the frame pin to engage in. So I inserted the aft frame pin in first and lowered the forward section down onto the dowels. I use some scrap aluminum tube if I remember to make stops so the frame didn’t go all the way down to the wood. It really was pretty simple and you can see all the parts in the photos.

      Hope that helps a little!
